11:30AM - Vermouth: The Bitter & The Sweet
Hosted by: De Vine Vineyard
Welcome to the Vermouth renaissance… with classic brands revitalized and new Vermouths emerging both from the traditional European distillers and from upstart New World artisans. What is Vermouth? It’s an “aromatized” & fortified white wine that’s a perfect aperitif on its own or a key ingredient in the world of cocktails.
Join De Vine Spirits’ master distiller Ken Winchester for an entertaining & informative tour of the world’s great Vermouths. Mixologist Bradley Scissons will be on hand to sling some creative cocktails that showcase Vermouth’s complex balance of bitter & sweet. Throughout the seminar, tasters will be available for everyone to enjoy.
Now is a great time to raise your Vermouth awareness!
1:30PM - How to Stock your Home Bar with a Local Twist
Seeking to start a home bar? Stocking it with the right ingredients is a great place to start. Navigating the liquor store can be challenging but Pamela Sanderson (Cascadia Liquor Stores Regional Manager/Sommelier), Mark Wachtin (Storied Wine and Spirit Owner and Representative), and Shawn Soole make it easy. They will walk you through the basics of setting up your home bar with a focus on interesting “local” ingredients. Throughout the seminar, cocktails will be created using these ingredients, and you will be able to enjoy tasters.
Try some local samples made with Wayward Spirits, Todd Creek Cider, Unsworth and Sheringham Wineries. In partnership with Charellis.
3:30PM - The Absinthe Attraction
Hosted By: Arbutus Distillery
We’ve all heard ‘absinthe will make you go blind’ but is that really true?
Join Michael Pizzitelli, head distiller at Arbutus Distillery as he walks you through all things Absinthe. Pizzitelli will take you on a journey exploring the history, secrets of distillation, and Absinthe's cultural significance all while separating fact from fiction of this magical liquid. Once you have the power of knowledge Matt Hattersley, the head bartender at Arbutus Distillery, will craft classic absinthe cocktails and their modern counterparts for you to try while showing you how to make them.
Who's Matt Hattersley?
Having bartended his way through a couple of science degrees in the UK, Matt found a creative outlet in craft cocktails. Now stationed firmly in BC, he runs the cocktail program at the Arbutus Lounge & Distillery in Nanaimo, producing a range of inspired historic and worldly concoctions.
